Rye's Ride
Rye is a big, funny, burly, blonde boy. He loves to have his neck and ears scratched and
rubbed (on his terms), he loves to play with toys, and he loves to be outside. He has come a
long way since he’s been with us, and we continue to work on things that will make him an even
better companion. He knows some basic commands (sit and down) and is very obedient and
will stop on a dime if he hears, “no.” He loves working for treats. He is a leaner and loves to be
loved on. He has not shown any issues with counter surfing. He likes to follow us around the
house and often moves from room to room as we do.
One of his greatest attributes is one he shares with his brother Tank — he gives you a
chorus of “Woo Woo” whenever you return home. That is the most vocal he gets, other than a
morning rooing session if you are not out of bed in a timely fashion. He has shown that he is
cat-curious. We have two cats, who he has shown occasional interest in, but he doesn’t chase
them. The cats generally stay upstairs and Rye stays downstairs. He has shown an ability to do
stairs, but he doesn’t go up in search of them. He hasn’t tried that since the first week we had
him.
Rye loves his walks and prances about in his winter coat throughout much of the walk.
He walks really well on leash, doesn’t pull, and stays next to you. He notices squirrels on walks,
but he doesn’t go after them. He does, however, enjoy chasing squirrels in the backyard, though
his prey drive overall seems to be mediocre. He likes food, and is very food motivated, which
will make training with him easy. He likes routine, and he is very independent in the house. He
will lay for hours in a room by himself, but will come when called or when he wants some loving.
He is also good about letting us know when he needs to go outside. Outside of the first
transition week, he has not had an accident in the house.
Rye is not a fan of strangers, and it takes a while for him to warm up to new people. He typically
peaks around from behind us once he has greeted them at the door. Rye doesn’t like loud
noises, whether it’s fireworks outside or banging pans inside. He is sensitive to loud noises,
and will skitter away, but recovers quickly. He also doesn’t like being startled…but really, who
does? We think Rye’s ideal home will be with a single person or couple who have experience
with dogs. Rye needs a relatively quiet home with a routine lifestyle and few visitors. He would
like a place to explore off leash, and enjoys running several laps a day in the back yard to burn
off his energy. Rye enjoys being around our greyhounds and would do well in a greyhound
home. We don’t know how he would do around small dogs. He is truly an excellent guy, and as
he continues to gain confidence in himself and in us, we know he will show even more sides of
his personality. With just a little patience and the right environment, Rye has the potential to be
a very loving companion.
