Lefty just arrived on November 9, 2013. Lefty is being treated for a low thyroid and will be seen for cataracts in both his eyes. More updates to follow.

Lefty is a stunning and very social guy who we now know has a special need in forever home. Yesterday morning, Lefty made his trip to The Animal Ophthalmology Center in Williamston for his consult with Dr. Ramsey for what we knew were cataracts. His exam with Dr. Ramsey revealed that Lefty does have the cataracts in both eyes. One for the cataracts Lefty was born with. Both of Lefty’s retinas have early degeneration and most likely due to inherited retinal degeneration. There is no treatment for this inherited disease. Lefty is in no pain and most dogs adjust extremely well to low vision or loss of vision.

Lefty will be moving to our Special Needs section of the website. Right now, Lefty’s vision is effected somewhat by the disease. Impairment of his vision may progress slowly with advancing age. Lefty was 2 years old in May of this year. Lefty will need a home where the environment is consistent and things stay in place. He’ll probably do best in a home with another dog that can help teach him the layout of the land.
