DDs Ruffnready
Ruffian got off to a tough start in his new life as a pet. Adopted directly from the track, his family decided they didn’t really want a greyhound. He spent the first year of his life as a pet tied outside. One day he decided that he’d rather be free and broke that chain and ran away. He was found and turned in to a kill shelter where his cage tag was labeled with “OLD” (how undignified! He’s only six!!) and was left there to die.
A GEM volunteer found him there and we were able to rescue him just 2 days before he was scheduled to be euphonized. Ruffian is an exceptional dog, he is affectionate, smart (knows some basic commands like sit, wait, no) and is very willing to please. He needs a family with an open heart who will love him for the rest of his life and who won’t let him down like his first “family” did. Ruffian will make an excellent family companion, his temperament is exceptional, he likes children, other dogs and gets along well with all the animals in his foster home. Ruffian has been adopted by the Wesley’s!
Update: I want to let everyone know that Ruff was helped to the bridge yesterday, 10/18/2006, at 2:30 pm. He was healthy all day, running around, barking and just being Ruff. That night at bed time, Brad let him and Kelli out. He came back in lame. He did not appear to be in serious trouble or pain. We thought maybe he pulled a muscle or strained his back hindquarter. He has scars on his back side from surgery and our vet was pretty sure he had some soft tissue repaired back there at some point. We never thought it would lead to him passing. He broke between his knee and hip area on the hind quarter. A tough place to repair. Ruff has had a few back issues and he could not walk with out help on his one good leg so to keep him pain free, we let him go.
It is the hardest thing in my life that I have ever done. Brad and I stayed with him and stroked him and let him know we loved him. He was our very special friend, our heart dog and my family and I are in shock and sad beyond words. We thank you for bringing him to us, he will be missed beyond words and remain in our hearts.
