Current Affair
We’ve had Kitty for a few days now and she seems to have settled in to our household. I think she might be the most affectionate greyhound we’ve ever seen. She wants nothing more than to stand close and get pet, and will kiss you with great enthusiasm if you get too close… or if you are sleeping and she can sneak up on you.
She does pretty well with commands, and does great with name recognition. You can call her from anywhere in the house and she’ll come trotting right over to see what you are up to. She gets along well with our older male greyhound, and for the most part they ignore each other. She’ll bark if he gets too close (or steps on her) when she is sleeping, but that has been the extent of negative interactions. The two dogs have happily napped on adjacent beds without issue. She hasn’t shown any sleep space or food aggression with humans yet.
She does quite well on a leash, but wants to look at and smell absolutely everything. She has a good prey drive but doesn’t strangle herself too much on the leash when she sees something small and furry. She can usually be distracted by standing in the way and giving her a good scratch. In the last few days she has gotten better about pulling when she sees a critter and I think that will continue to improve.
She likes a good walk, but gets tired after a mile or so. She doesn’t do a lot of running in our fenced yard either, so she doesn’t seem to need too much exercise for a 3 year old greyhound. She gets quite frenzied with toys that have squeakers, so that should probably be avoided.
She’s a good napper, and after she’s had dinner she doesn’t move much for the rest of the night. She has some pretty interesting sleeping positions which has provided a lot of entertainment. She sleeps in her crate in our room at night and has yet to whine. She might get up and fluff her bed in the middle of the night but that’s all we hear from her.
She doesn’t seem to mind being in her crate, and will shoot in there like a bullet if she’s bribed with a treat. She may whine for a minute but will settle herself down and take a nap. Now and then she’d whine a little more but is always able to settle back down on her own without human intervention.
All in all, she is a real sweet girl. Very affectionate, always interested in what you are doing, well behaved, and fun to have around.
