September 30, 2001, Ami passed away after racing around the back yard. She is pictured above with her family, from L-R top to bottom: Dawn, Pete, Torry, Ami and Ruler.

The following is from Ami’s foster mom Merrie West:

“She laughed at life and danced in the wind. In the three months I fostered her I never found a thing she did not embrace. I would not give her to a home without a fence because she loved to run, just for the joy of it. Then along came Pete & Dawn. Could there ever be a more perfect home? Never.

Pete worshipped the ground she walked on. Rather I should say he worshipped the ground she RACED around on. Even when that race was down the street with Pete breathlessly in hot pursuit because he had forgotten to close the garage door. (AGAIN!) That merry chase ended this morning at 1:20 AM when Amazon raced around the back yard with her sister Taurus and new brother Ruler. She came into the house and dropped at the door. All of Pete’s efforts to revive her were unsuccessful.

Sometimes we take life for granted. Sometimes life isn’t fair. Sometimes we are dealt a gut wrenching blow that brings us back to reality. Losing your loved ones should not come like this. Amazon was four years old. She was in her prime with never a sick day. Pete and Dawn should have been able to expect her to live with them for more than the eight months she did. That same eight months was more than enough for Amazon to work her magic.

Hug your hounds real tight today folks. ….and don’t wait until they come in for the night to do it.
